The National Honor Society chapter at HHS recently held a ceremony to recognize graduating NHS seniors and induct juniors into the chapter.

Seniors were presented with their NHS graduation regalia, and the new senior officers for the 2021-2022 school year were recognized.

This year’s National Honor Society chapter at HHS completed a grand total of over 8,988 hours, according to Jennifer Kotler, a sponsor of the club and math teacher at HHS who spoke at the May 2 ceremony.

During the ceremony, which was attended by the families of the NHS students, 71 seniors were honored by having their name and the amount of service hours they completed read to the audience. Among those students were Tristan Brown, Sarah-Anne Williams, Kendal Giles and Camilla Pele who all received the highest award for service hours, the Gold Presidential Medal, which is awarded to students who complete over 250 hours of service during their senior year.

Kotler noted that “this year's senior class had over 7,131 hours of service."

Kotler, who has organized many service events for the NHS together with co-sponsor Heather Thomas, says she is especially proud of the students for completing service hours with the coronavirus pandemic.

"It's amazing that these seniors were able to get so many hours, and make service events," she said.

All seniors in the NHS received an NHS stole to wear to their graduation ceremony on May 21. Also during the ceremony, 62 juniors were inducted into the National Honor Society and will make up the senior class of NHS students next school year.

Together with the induction was the introduction of the new NHS officers for next year, which include Carson Fisher, Luke Arvey, Ben Dye, Roma Brassel, Hua Jin, Elle Kate Kotler and Leila Seastrand.

Carson, who was selected as the president of the NHS chapter at HHS, said he felt "extremely strong officers were chosen" and that he was "extremely honored to be chosen as president" of the historic organization.
